With Green Township continuing to weigh the future of an ordinance allowing medical marijuana cultivation in the township, the state announced Tuesday the granting of medical marijuana growing permits to three more companies.
The committee voted 5-0 five months ago to close Trinca Airport, which opened in 1939 and uses a turf runway, effective Sept. 1.
Green Township bought the airport in 2002 for $2.28 million in order to held off a private developer’s plan for a large housing development at the site.
Phillips previously said that financial and safety factors drove the decision.
The township’s medical marijuana law will be discussed Monday by the Green Township Committee but only during the committee’s executive session, which is closed to the public.
After a highly-charged public hearing on Wednesday on revisions to the township’s ordinance permitting a medical marijuana cultivation business, the Township Committee tabled the ordinance for further review.
Following the municipality’s approval to conditionally permit medical marijuana manufacturing in its AI-10 zone in July, the Green Township Committee will hold another public hearing to further amend the zoning, during its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Although no business of this type is currently planned for Green Township, the Township Committee recently amended a zoning ordinance to permit medical marijuana growth, production and manufacturing solely in the township's agricultural industrial zone.
Township Clerk Mark Zschack said Tuesday no marijuana growing business has approached the township, but the Township Committee felt it was in the best interest of the municipality to amend its ordinance to allow this kind of industry.
