Although no business of this type is currently planned for Green Township, the Township Committee recently amended a zoning ordinance to permit medical marijuana growth, production and manufacturing solely in the township's agricultural industrial zone.
Township Clerk Mark Zschack said Tuesday no marijuana growing business has approached the township, but the Township Committee felt it was in the best interest of the municipality to amend its ordinance to allow this kind of industry.
The Township Committee, which voted unanimously to amend its agricultural industrial zone usage on July 15, decided a medical marijuana business could be allowed in the agricultural industrial or AI-10 zone with particular provisions. All businesses should be in compliance with licensure, requirements and permits through the state of New Jersey, and all marijuana must be grown organically.
The tract for this business model requires a minimum lot size of 15 acres, surrounded with fencing at least 7 feet high and with a maximum building height of 35 feet. There can be up to 10 buildings on the property, with each greenhouse considered a separate building. All structures will have the proper safety and security barriers installed, as well as security stationed on the property around the clock and on-site video monitoring.
No direct sales are permitted to the public from the property, per the ordinance.
