As Hoboken continues to consider applications for retail marijuana shops in the city, officials are taking steps to tighten up regulations related to cannabis consumption.
On Wednesday, the City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance that expands the smoking ban in all parks to include marijuana, e-cigarettes, vaping devices and tobacco.
Previously, the code just prohibited tobacco use, but Corporation Counsel Brian Aloia said the change was made to clarify that cannabis and vapes are also among the banned substances.
With a growing number of applications before the city looking to open cannabis dispensaries, Councilman Phil Cohen said officials have heard concerns that parks would become a popular spot for smoking marijuana and that the amendment aims to “give some comfort to neighbors about the possibility of that happening.”
