Toms River won't be joining other Ocean County towns that have moved to ban marijuana businesses. At least not for now.
Township Council members voted 6 to 1 Tuesday to table an ordinance that would have barred companies that sell, manufacture or distribute weed from operating in town.
Instead, the council plans to form a committee of residents and members of the governing body who will research the pros and cons of allowing marijuana businesses. The aim of is to bring the ordinance back for a vote at the June 9 meeting.
The Toms River Township Council has tabled an ordinance that would ban the operation of retail cannabis businesses.
The council voted 6-1 Tuesday night to delay action to further discuss and explore the issues involved with the potential for retail businesses under New Jersey's law governing the legalization of adult recreational marijuana use. Councilman Daniel Rodrick voted against tabling the measure.
The Toms River Township Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on its proposed ordinance to ban retail cannabis within the township on Tuesday.
The township council is set to meet at 6 p.m. in the L. Manuel Hirschblond Meeting Room at Toms River's Town Hall.

The township took the first step toward banning businesses that sell, manufacture or distribute marijuana when council members introduced an ordinance prohibiting legal weed sales Tuesday night.
Council members voted 6 to 1 to introduce the measure, which would block marijuana businesses for a five-year period. Councilwoman Laurie Huryk voted against the ordinance, which is scheduled for a public hearing at 6 p.m. May 11.
"In its current form I do not believe it should be introduced," Huryk said of the cannabis ordinance.
Six months after 64 percent of Toms River voters approved a measure to legalize recreational marijuana in New Jersey, many are wondering why the Township Council is considering a measure that would ban businesses in dealing with cannabis.
Residents on Tuesday night expressed their displeasure of such a ban, saying that doing so would mean the township will lose out on tax money that would come from businesses that would provide weed to those who want it and that could benefit local schools and other need improvement.
Today's late news that Toms River is planning to be the next NJ muncipality in line to ban Cannabis businesses in the town told me that it's time to dig deeper into exactly how the Town Opt Out provision of the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance, and Marketplace Modernization Act (NJCREAMMA) will serve to limit the amount of people able to enter the regulated or legal Cannabis industry via the Micro License Provision. Lets just say for now the area holds a special place in my heart.

The Toms River Township Council is scheduled to introduce an ordinance on Tuesday that would ban any cannabis businesses within the township.
The council meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m. in the L. Manuel Hirschblond Meeting Room at the Toms River town hall.
The agenda for Tuesday's meeting also includes the introduction of the 2021 township budget, and the introduction of an ordinance renewing the franchise rights of New Jersey Natural Gas to lay pipes in the town's roads.
For weeks now, police departments across Ocean and Monmouth Counties have denounced the Marijuana Law in its current state for a number of glaring and obvious reasons including this past Saturday at a press conference in Point Pleasant Beach where several of them including PPB Chief Joseph Michigan, who spoke at the press conference, voiced their concerns with the bill and pushed for change.
A Toms River-based company that bills itself as a "new and unique delivery service" says it will legally deliver cannabis treats to your door -- no matter which county you live in. Slumped Kitchen won't sell you cannabis in its raw form, per se, but it will sell treats like brownies and cookies and drivers might give you up to one ounce of the raw stuff to enjoy with those as an "optional" free gift.
