The Lakehurst Borough Council unanimously approved the three businesses — a manufacturer license and two retail licenses — at its Sept. 15 council meeting.
It approved Life Extracts LLC for a Class 2 cannabis manufacturer license for an operation that will be in the light industrial zone. The retail licenses were approves for Stoke Industries LLC to be located at 112 Center St. and for C3 Lakehurst LLC at 145 Route 70, former Burger King property.
Medical marijuana dispensaries received the first retail sales license approvals on April 11, but it's unclear when New Jersey will expand the list.
South Toms River approved three businesses — The Social Leaf, Altitude Cannabis, and Shore Cannabis — and now the borough and those businesses are in a holding pattern until the state moves on their applications.
South Toms River has remained open to having those businesses in the borough.
"The borough has not taken any action on cannabis, and continues to express acceptance of such within the borough; all based on state laws at this point," borough administrator Joseph Kostecki said last summer.
That acceptance now is translating into consideration of allowing a retail cannabis business to open.
