At Tuesday’s City Council Meeting, a resolution to approve a marijuana retail business and consumption lounge at 1301 West Front Street, at the corner of Front Street and Clinton Avenue, received scrutiny from the Plainfield City Council.
There is already one recreational dispensary in Plainfield with more on the way, but a consumption lounge differs in one major, obvious way.
“With retail, you are just selling a product, and it cannot be consumed on the grounds. The consumption lounge would work similar to a cigar lounge or similar to an establishment that offers alcohol,” said Director of Economic Development Zenobia Fields in response to a question from Richard Wyatt.
“Is there going to only be one lounge? Is that going to be another lounge in the future?” asked Council Vice President Terri Briggs-Jones. “You were saying it’s like a hookah spot as you use for an example, but I want to know because if there’s only going to be one on the West End, is there going to be something on the East End too?”
Fields explained that the City of Plainfield will have granted all of its marijuana retail licenses with the approval of this retail business and consumption lounge, which would be run by Kulture Plainfield, implying that it would be the last one in the city.
