The Friday ribbon cutting for Downtown Flwr on the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza made history as the first minority/women owned dispensary in Jersey City.
With one entrance on the Pedestrian Mall and a second one on Columbus Avenue, Downtown Flwr is set to sell medical cannabis at first, but designed with the anticipation of opening as a source of recreational cannabis in the near future, possibly as early as a month, according to facility manager, Ken Oreslau. The owners also hope to eventually have a cannabis lounge for onsite consumption.
Among those on hand to celebrate was Downtown Councilman James Solomon who reflected that voters approved recreational cannabis sales, which will help do away with the underground economy that disproportionately harms people of color.
While the council, Solomon reminded, is considering putting a cap on the total number of such dispensaries in Jersey City, he added that Downtown FLWR is a huge boost for the local economy, drawing in customers that may also shop at other local businesses and eat at local restaurants.
“We want those dollars to stay in Jersey City,” he said.
