A cannabis store could move in next to Red Bank Liquors after the planning board voted to approve the site Monday night. But the store, named Canopy Crossroad, would still require a borough license before opening.
The store at 9 West St. is one of three cannabis retail stores that have been put before a borough land use board.
In March, the planning board approved a cannabis store that could take over the China Moon restaurant in the Wawa strip mall. And in January, Plug Naturals LLC proposed to be located at 156 West Front St., went before the zoning board to argue that its location permits a cannabis store. The zoning board allowed its application to be heard at the planning board, which has a lower threshold for approval. It will be heard on Monday, July 17, at borough hall.
When Plug Naturals went before the zoning board in January, an error was discovered on the borough’s cannabis map created in July 2021. The zones of exclusion drawn around schools were less than the 1,000-foot buffer required by the federal drug free school zone. If the buffer was drawn at 1,000 feet, the proposed locations for Plug Naturals and Canopy Crossroad would fall within the buffer zone.
