Johnson went on to assert that the legalization of cannabis sales via regulated retail stores has been shown to reduce the prevalence of cannabis sales on the black market, thereby reducing crime and other public safety concerns. Furthermore, “by providing a safe, legal means for adults to purchase cannabis products, our store can reduce the demand for illegal drug dealers and decrease the risk of associated criminal activity.”
She reminded listeners that the N.J. Cannabis Regulatory Commission is legally obligated to oversee regulation and licensing of cannabis businesses in Tuckerton, “and we will ensure that our store complies with strict requirements for security, product testing and labeling, and responsible marketing practices,” Johnson said. NJCRC’s regulations are designed to hold cannabis products to a standard of quality and safety, and to ensure they are not marketed to children or vulnerable populations.
Mayor Sue Marshall recently put together a committee to research recreational cannabis business, and Councilman Brian Martin is exploring the potential economic benefits, but the borough council has yet to develop an opinion for or against it.
