Jersey City’s Planning Board commissioners could help clear a path for the local production and sale of recreational marijuana when they vote Tuesday on a series of amendments affecting the construction and daily operations of municipal cannabis establishments.
During a meeting on June 8, the board heard a presentation from Matt Ward, a supervising planner for the city, detailing the amendments that would dictate guidelines for building marijuana dispensaries, distributors, processors, wholesalers, and cultivators in Jersey City. The city has until Aug. 21 to enact ordinances on cannabis establishments, a cutoff date set when Gov. Phil Murphy formally legalized marijuana in-state earlier this year.
“Regarding the zoning, state law permits municipalities to regulate…location, number of establishments, which classes-slash-licenses the city wants to permit, hours of operation, and manner of business,” Ward said.
