Unlike many Central Jersey municipalities, Sayreville has introduced an ordinance to ban both recreational and medical cannabis businesses from operating in the borough.
An ordinance to amend borough zoning to prohibit all six classes of cannabis business licenses – cultivation, manufacturing, wholesale, distribution, retail and delivery businesses – was introduced at Monday's borough council meeting.
The proposed ordinance also says the ban would be "in the best interest of the public health, safety, and welfare of the residents."
The ordinance would also prohibit alternative treatment centers, which dispense medical marijuana products as defined in the state's Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act.
A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for the June 14 virtual borough council meeting.
