A request by New Jersey's largest medical marijuana retailer to open a distribution center on Route 73 in Mount Laurel will be heard by the Zoning Board of Adjustment on August 5.
The request comes as state residents in November will vote on the legal sale of marijuana to adults for recreational use.
Curaleaf New Jersey Inc. of Bellmawr has applied for variances to open the facility at 1315 Route 73 North, a building that now includes a Giant Fitness gym and is owned by Balducci Inc. of Haddonfield.
At its last meeting, the Verona Township Council considered a request by Green Thumb Industries (GTI) New Jersey, LLC for a medical cannabis dispensary.
GTI New Jersey, which opened a dispensary in the city of Paterson less than two years ago, has asked the Verona Township Council to write a letter of support for a dispensary that would be located at 30 Pompton Ave., the former Chase Bank location.
The Township Council this week introduced an ordinance that would allow for dispensaries to operate along the Route 9 corridor, one of the only towns in Ocean County to formally endorse medical marijuana.
"It's not that we have somebody who is interested in opening a dispensary. We're just allowing it to happen," Mayor Ken Baulderstone said in an interview. Ocean Township officials unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that could attract a medical cannabis dispensary to town. The proposed zoning law permits legal medical marijuana sales in the C-1 general commercial district.
The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission oversees the state’s cannabis industry. Dispensaries must receive authorization from the state in order to offer medical marijuana and supplies to eligible patients.
The Hoboken City Council unanimously passed a sweeping medical marijuana ordinance Wednesday, opening the door for two dispensaries near the PATH Station.

The new dispensary, located at 1062 N. Delsea Drive, is one of only three operators licensed to dispense in South Jersey, and only the 11th to open a dispensary statewide.

The local Planning Board approved the dispensary in July 2019. The growing facility was approved in June 2019.
