A proposed cannabis dispensary and smoking lounge in Newark is back on track after seeing earlier resistance from the city’s planning board, reports say.
Earlier this year, Hashstoria – which includes well-known Wu-Tang Clan rapper Raekwon among its founders – put in the paperwork to open a new location at 799-805 Broad Street. The company has three existing facilities in Oregon.
New Jersey’s largest city is slated to welcome a new recreational cannabis facility after officials in Newark signed off on a plan to covert a former restaurant space into a dispensary called Motherland Cannabis Company.
Weehawken-based Motherland Cannabis Company gained approval from the Central Planning Board during their June 26 meeting to open up shop at 360 Broad Street. Formerly home to Big Man Restaurant, the spot is situated just north of Downtown Newark.
A small, unassuming storefront that once housed a shoe repair shop will soon house Bloomfield’s next cannabis dispensary, following a ruling from the Planning Board on Tuesday night.
The Board unanimously approved the application of Emerald Tea Supply Company, a service-disabled veteran-owned boutique dispensary to be located at 368 Broad Street. Members appeared satisfied with the owner’s business model, floor plan and security proposal, the latter of which was reviewed and approved by Bloomfield public safety director Samuel DeMaio.

The application from Emerald Tea Company sought conditional use and minor site plan approval to operate a class 5 retail adult cannabis dispensary in a neighborhood business B-2 zone.

The Wu-Tang Clan may hail from Staten Island, but Newark has certainly been good to the Grammy-winning music group. The acclaimed 90s rappers filmed much of their biopic “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” in downtown Newark and the South Ward. Now, one of the group members, Raekwon, is bringing a new venture: Hashstoria, a cannabis lounge, to 799-805 Broad Street.
