Cheryl Merklinger requested a 1,000-foot distance between cannabis businesses and schools, places of worship and parks. Committee member Susan Scarpa supported that distance.
DJ Howard, National Community Program Director for multiple cannabis organizations, stated, “I do not support rescinding these cannabis licenses from those who have already received their letters of support and a resolution from this council.” He spoke of the educational opportunities and medicinal uses as well.
“I echo most of what cannabis dispensaries are saying. We shouldn't be eliminating these people that have already been approved,” contributed Nick Erickson.
Mel Valdez remarked, “I don’t agree with revoking any of the current resolutions that have already been previously approved.” She added, “We're just opening up ourselves to further litigation, which we really can't afford. And also it puts West Orange in a very bad light that people cannot come here to do business because in the end we're just going to change the rules.”
“This town needs to attract good businesses and practices like this and situations like this where we're pulling previously approved businesses from a process undermine any attempt to bring in good businesses of any type,” commented Todd Dubovy.
Town Council President Tammy Williams agreed, “It is my suggestion and recommendation that we wait while the businesses go through the process.” She said she didn’t want to rescind anyone’s recommendation.
