One month after rejecting a medical marijuana dispensary's application to open on Main Street, the Borough Council is rescinding its laws allowing the dispensaries altogether.
The council voted unanimously Monday to introduce three ordinances undoing the actions it took last May to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to open in the town's Community Commercial zones and gateway zone at the east end of Main Street.
Council members changed their minds on the dispensary idea in the face of significant public outcry in November and December, when medical dispensary First Choice Health and Wellness submitted an application to open in an office building at 340 Main St. between Brooklake Road and Niles Avenue.
Voting 6-0 to reject the application on Dec. 12, council members said the applicant was missing key information about its financials and future plans, and expressed skepticism that First Choice could survive as a business without transitioning to recreational marijuana sales, which would violate local zoning law.
Should the council vote to adopt the three ordinances it introduced Monday night, medical dispensaries would once again violate local zoning law as well.
