There are at least two entities with a serious interest in operating a cannabis retail store on any of three state highways that pass through the borough, according to Township Clerk/Administrator Kevin Sluka, who says he receives 2-3 calls weekly from others inquiring about licensing, potential locations, local ordinances and other logistical matters.
Meanwhile, in nearby Raritan, the Borough Council last month passed an ordinance permitting medical cannabis alternative treatment centers (ATCs) to operate as an expanded ATC dispensary - allowing ATCs such as Valley Wellness on Route 206 near the Somerville traffic circle to sell recreational cannabis.
The next step for Valley Wellness includes appearing before the planning board for additional site plan approval since their current site plan only applies to medical marijuana use; Valley Wellness will also need to secure approval for a parking variance.
