In Bayonne, unlike Hoboken, no applications for cannabis stores have yet been reviewed and there has not been a public uproar, demanding that the city become less weed-friendly. Yet, the city council will on April 20 consider amending a law passed last year that would allow retailers to do business on commercial corridors in the heart of the city.
Under the amended version, which the City Council introduced 4-1 at its last meeting, retailers would only be allowed to operate in what is called the “Heavy Industrial District” or the neighboring Highway Commercial/Selected Light Industrial District.
The larger area is east of Route 440 — a chunk of the city with just a few roads and a variety of industrial facilities including a power station and a packaging supplies warehouse. The smaller area in the southwest corner of the city. The city’s existing laws allow cannabis retailers in certain commercial sections of Broadway, Kennedy Boulevard and Avenue C.
The city administration did not comment on the reason for the amendment.
