The Madison Council began what’ll be a long road to potentially introducing a marijuana dispensary to the town at the Jan. 24 town meeting.
In order to prescribe cannabis, medical practitioners must be registered to prescribe and follow strict regulations. Dispensaries will have to follow both statewide and local regulations and annual inspections for renewal.
Madison Borough prohibited cannabis establishments and services with the passing of Ordinance 30-2021 last June, however, according to Councilman Eric Range, the ordinance said nothing about medical sales. They currently have one applicant who was approved by the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission who has given a desire to operate in Madison.
The Council said they are unsure whether this unknown applicant, who submitted their application in 2019 and waited two years for approval from the State, was simply “shopping around” or explicitly wants to operate in Madison. They have not received a submission from this applicant, said Range.
