Trustee Bob Zuckerman’s anticipated introduction of a proposal to allow the sale of recreational cannabis in the village was tabled due to a desire by the board for more discussion. Zuckerman initially planned to introduce three ordinances regarding cannabis at last night’s meeting, but decided to move that introduction until the board’s Jan. 21 meeting.
Although the ordinances weren’t formally introduced, the trustees didn’t refrain from discussing them. Trustee Donna Coallier expressed concern about the smoking of cannabis outdoors. “We have to make sure that we’re doing enough vetting to get input from our middle school parents in particular and really anybody else that would have a concern about use of the product in open air space,” Coallier said.
Trustee Summer Jones voiced a desire to have racial diversity among applicants for the potential cannabis businesses. Jones said that, in her own research, she has found that 81% of owners of these types of businesses are White. Jones said she would like to see inclusion of minority business owners in the town’s search for a tenant if the ordinance passes.
