Township voters on Tuesday will be asked to consider whether recreational marijuana businesses should be allowed to operate within Lacey.
The non-binding ballot question aims to inform elected officials of Lacey voters' opinions on the matter, rather than setting immediate policy.
The issue has divided the five-member Township Committee, which is torn between respecting the wishes of more than 60% of Lacey voters, who supported legalizing recreational marijuana use in the 2020 election, and concerns that embracing recreational cannabis businesses could lead to crime while providing little revenue.
Mayor Peter Curatolo has opposed allowing cannabis businesses to open within Lacey.
"I'm not against medical marijuana. I'm not against marijuana as a product. And I'm a capitalist," he said. "I simply do not want the product grown or sold in our town, for a couple of reasons… I do not want our town to become a hub for pot tourism."
