The borough has decided not to allow the newly legalized cannabis trade to get a business foothold here, although officials do not rule out a change of position after the potential impacts of New Jersey laws become clearer.
The Borough Council on Monday night, on a unanimous vote, adopted an ordinance prohibiting licenses for any of the six classes of state-sanctioned cannabis businesses. The measure received its public hearing at an earlier meeting, although some residents spoke up Monday night.
The ordinance and council members say New Jersey’s new laws and guidelines “present uncertainties regarding the potential future impacts,” enough to make the borough wary. The decision follows discussions at the Planning Board and a special committee consisting of the mayor, council members, and professional staff.
