The North Hudson senator voted “yes” to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance, and Marketplace Modernization Act, which legalized adult-use recreational marijuana and set up a framework for recreational marijuana sales.
But in Union City, where he is mayor, Stack voted last month in favor of introducing an ordinance that would ban recreational cannabis sales within city limits.
“As a State Senator, I voted in support of the legislation because a majority of New Jerseyans are in favor of it,” Stack said in an emailed statement. “As a mayor, I get dozens of calls a week concerning people smoking marijuana and other issues surrounding quality of life. Union City is just too densely populated to become a location for recreational sales.”
The senator/mayor’s position is an indicator that, despite widespread public support for legalization, some towns in Hudson County and across the state are still uneasy about the prospect of recreational marijuana sales.
