Town officials have introduced an ordinance to temporarily ban marijuana sales and businesses.
Medical marijuana users and supporters spoke about their cannabis experiences during Tuesday's Board of Aldermen meeting as town officials presented a new ordinance to ban all marijuana establishments, distributors and delivery services. The ban, officials said, will give them time to develop rules and regulations on cannabis sales.
"So the best option at this point in time is to put this ordinance forth to basically give us time to take this to a committee to be able to explore this fully," Alderwoman Sandra Wittner said during the meeting.
Municipalities have until mid-August, six months from when New Jersey officially legalized marijuana in February, to decide whether they will allow sales within their borders or pass an ordinance banning it. If they miss that deadline, growing and selling will automatically be permitted for a five-year period.
