That seems certain to change given the county’s size — it’s the largest of New Jersey’s 21 counties — and location in the middle of the state and at the crossroads of major highways such as the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 295 and Garden State Parkway.
There’s been significant interest in locating medical marijuana sites in Burlington County, too.
When the program launched, two of the six alternative treatment centers approved by the state sought local approvals to open dispensaries in Maple Shade and Westampton, but ended up locating elsewhere.
During the most recent round of applications considered by the state, Fresh Harvest Group, a Delaware company linked to a New England cannabis operation known as Nature’s Remedy, planned to open a 46,000-square-foot dispensary and indoor cultivation site in a warehouse/office building off Veterans Drive in the Commerce Square section of Burlington City.
Rumson-based Panacea Inc. also applied for one of the dispensary licenses. The company has plans to build a 51,408-square-foot greenhouse and operations building and adjacent solar fields on a 197-acre farm off Bunting Bridge Road in New Hanover. The company said that the site would be used solely for cultivation and processing, and that it was interested in locating a dispensary in one of two undisclosed towns in Burlington County.
Neither company was among the six selected by the Department of Health.
