Without comment and as part of a package of 10 otherwise routine resolutions, the Township Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution opposing the legalization of recreational marijuana by the state.
The council also introduced, again without comment and by a unanimous vote, an ordinance "prohibiting marijuana within all zones" in the township.
The proposed ordinance, which will have a public hearing and possible final vote at the council's Oct. 9 meeting, prohibits "both recreational and medical marijuana" and defines marijuana as "any plant or product containing tetrahydrocannabinol or any derivative or synthetic form of same."
After the meeting, Mayor Joshua Hertzberg said he believes the township's residents are against the use of marijuana, "even medicinal," and noted the federal government still has laws against possession of the plant on its books.
