The new draft of the 163-page "New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory and Expungement Aid Modernization Act" spells out all the details of a possible new marijuana industry: everything from the types of ingredients that must be listed on the packaging of cannabis products sold in the Garden State, to the salaries of the five commissioners who would be charged with overseeing the industry if the bill gets the General Assembly's approval. (Up to $141,000 for the chair, and up to $125,000 for each of the other four commissioners.)
Here’s the roll call of votes for the three cannabis related bills that were approved in the Senate and Assembly committees Nov. 26.
S2703/A4497: The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory and Expungement Aid Modernization Act which legalizes personal use cannabis for adults; creates the Cannabis Regulatory Commission to regulate personal use and medical cannabis; and provides expungement relief for certain past marijuana offenses.
Committees in the New Jersey state Senate and Assembly may have both approved a bill that would legalize recreational marijuana in the state, but the bill's success isn't certain, said Politico New Jersey Reporter Sam Sutton.
New Jersey lawmakers in key committees are set to vote on a package of marijuana-related legislation, including a bill to fully legalize cannabis, on Monday.
You can follow along and watch the hearing live on this feed from NJTV News:
The votes were a historic first for New Jersey as lawmakers moved closer to making the sale and use of marijuana legal. But the fight for those on both sides of the legalization debate is not over.
What happens now is that Democrats who control the Legislature need to pass the bills related to legal weed in the Senate and Assembly, where it is not clear if supporters have enough votes to make that happen.
The State Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Assembly Appropriations Committee approved an adult-use cannabis bill Monday after a standing-room-only hearing that lasted nearly five hours and featured a back-and-forth between pro- and anti-marijuana testimony.
The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory and Expungement Aid Modernization Act (S2703) passed on a 7-4 vote with two abstentions by the Senate committee and 7-2 vote with one abstention by the Assembly committee.
This is starting now. Roll Call.
