Mayor Reed Gusciora joined John Dockery and Tahir Johnson outside of Simply Pure Downtown, Tuesday morning to celebrate the business being awarded a Class 5 Cannabis Dispensary license. According to NJ.gov, this license allows Dockery to purchase recreational cannabis from licensed cultivators, manufacturers, or wholesalers and sell those items to consumers in a retail store.
John is the CEO of Simply Pure Downtown Trenton, while Tahir is the CEO of Simply Pure Trenton. Dockery and Johnson, both Trenton natives, received two of the first 11 conditional marijuana licenses awarded in the State. This license allows the owner to build out operations for the cultivation, manufacture, dispensing, wholesale, distribution, or delivery of recreational use cannabis while working towards meeting the requirements for a cannabis cultivator,
Mayor Gusicora called it a “great day” for Trenton and its downtown area, but the celebration was really for “equity and justice.”
“Usually you have to be very wealthy or corporate to open up a cannabis dispensary. This is one of the ones where the State is allowing ex-offenders who have had marijuana convictions to still use their ‘tree’ but in a positive way and for economic value,” Gusciora said.
