The South Brunswick Township Council is set to pass an ordinance which would prohibit the sale, growth and distribution of cannabis in the community. The Council has expressed support for the provision in the past, citing supposed health risks, attraction of crime and the devaluation of property that are caused by marijuana businesses.
The ordinance prohibits cannabis cultivation, manufacturing, whole sales, distribution, retail sales and delivery. All members of the township council, including Mayor Charles Carley, voted to approve the ordinance for final passage.
In 2020, New Jersey voters approved of the legalization of recreational cannabis. In Middlesex County, nearly 63% of voters approved of a constitutional amendment legalizing marijuana, according to the county website.
