Without setting rules for Raritan Borough by ordinance to prohibit, limit or restrict cannabis establishments, businesses meeting state guidelines would be permitted to open retail establishments in the commercial zone of town, said borough attorney Bill Robertson.
In previous conversations surrounding the use of medical cannabis in Raritan Borough, Sarah Trent, of Middle Valley Partners Inc., proposed to hold the monopoly on medical cannabis sales in the borough. Trent is waiting for her permit to be approved by the state and is expected to hear back by June of this year, she said.
“At this point that’s binding us to her and the result of her application,” said Mayor Zachary Bray. “If we are going to do it (allow recreational cannabis sales), I’d like it to start with this woman and her company.”
If Raritan Borough permits the selling of recreational cannabis, Bray ideally wants to begin with retailers already permitted to sell medical, he said.
This would make Trent’s company the only retailer permitted to sell cannabis in Raritan.
