New Jersey’s leading marijuana legalization advocacy coalition, New Jersey United for Marijuana Reform (NJUMR), made up of leaders and organizations in the New Jersey law enforcement, civil rights, and medical communities, issued the following statement in response to Attorney General Grewal’s decision to put all marijuana prosecutions in New Jersey on hold until Sept. 4:
“Attorney General Grewal did the right thing by putting a hold on marijuana prosecutions throughout the state until the development of a statewide policy regarding marijuana prosecutions. In 2016, New Jersey made more than 32,000 arrests for marijuana possession. As the state makes progress toward legalization, hitting the pause button on current prosecutions for something that we expect the Legislature to address within a matter of months is wise and just. We look forward to working together with state and local officials, including through the attorney general’s proposed working group, to put in place permanent policies to end unjust marijuana prosecutions.”
